Call for Volunteers: Emerging Green Builders Group

This is a last call (of sorts) for EGB committee volunteers.  While we welcome new people throughout the year, we are finalizing our new committees for 2009 in the next few weeks, so if you want to get involved, now is the ideal time.

Thanks again to those of you who have expressed an interest in getting involved.  If you haven’t heard back from someone, please respond to this email.
We have been lucky enough to have a good response for volunteers, so there is a great opportunity to work collaboratively and share the burden with a few other people so the time commitment isn’t too bad.

The Greening of The Corporation: A new report analyzes how far advanced top companies are in addressing climate change and adopt

By: Heather Green

Some of the world's biggest consumer and tech companies, ranging from Intel (INTC) to Nike (NKE), are making strides to reduce their businesses' impact on global warming. But plenty of others, including Apple (AAPL), Estée Lauder (EL), and even Whole Foods (WFMI), still have a long way to go. Ceres, an alliance of investors and environmentalists, outlines those findings in a new report that examines the climate-change policies of 63 of the world's largest consumer and IT businesses.

The latest from shopping network: solar power.

John Murawski, Staff Writer

The home shopping network that sells just about everything is now selling solar energy generated by North Carolina sunshine.
QVC is operating the state's largest solar energy farm at its distribution facility near Rocky Mount. The QVC solar project is selling the electricity it generates to N.C. Electric Cooperatives, the Raleigh organization that supplies power in the state's smaller towns and rural areas.

The 1 megawatt solar farm generates electricity for about 150 homes. It operates only when the sun is shining, an average of about six hours a day.

Making the holidays greener!

By Cynthia Sewell, McClatchy Newspapers

Have you been dreaming of a green Christmas? With a little effort -- much less than you thought -- you and your family can enjoy the holiday and save the planet at the same time.
Holiday lights

Save money and energy by switching your old strands of incandescent holiday lights with newer LED (light emitting diode) holiday lights.

LED lights are safer, and they use 75 to 90 percent less energy and can last up to 10 times longer than traditional holiday lights. Plus, LEDs stay cool to the touch so they will not burn the tree or a child's fingers.
